We'd like to encourage members of the Juneau School Board to give our teachers a raise. We all know how much it costs to live in Juneau. In order to keep high quality teachers and give our community's children an excellent education, we need to offer competitive salaries for our teachers that reflect Juneau's high cost of living.
Sadly, current teacher salaries are not competitive with the rest of the state or nation. You may know teachers who are leaving the school district for better paid positions elsewhere. We ought to stem the tide and give our teachers a decent raise, so we can keep our quality teachers and attract new ones.
Juneau teachers haven't received a raise in their pay schedule since 1994-95. Since that time, the school district's budget has increased from $41 million to more than $50 million. The state increased school funding this year, giving the Juneau School District $650,000 more than had been budgeted for the upcoming school year. Clearly, we can afford to give our teachers a raise, just like other city and state workers who have benefited from better contracts recently.
Our children deserve good teachers. One way to make sure they get them is to give our teachers a better contract.
