Spectators listen for the sound of flowing crude oil passing through the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline. Oil officially began flowing at 10:06 a.m. June 20, 1977, for it's 30-day, nearly 800 mile journey to Valdez. Wednesday was the 30th anniversary of the opening of the oil pipeline. Gov. Sarah Palin congratulated Alyeska Pipeline and North Slope producers and crews for contributions made over three decades of production. " I applaud everyone involved in bringing the trans-Alaska pipeline into service and keeping it productive," Palin said. "It is the economic lifeline for the state and it's residents."
