JUNEAU - The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities will temporarily close Glacier Highway's southbound lane nightly beginning today as it conducts exploratory drilling.
The lane closure begins today at 8 p.m., and is expected to last until 5 a.m. Thursday.
During drilling operations, department officials are advising motorists to watch for flaggers in the roadway and follow their directions during the lane closures.
DOT&PF will post traffic revisions online at http://511.alaska.gov/.
Department officials say the drilling is necessary as plans to replace the bridge and widen Glacier Highway to four lanes begin.
The new bridge's elevation will be the same as the existing one, causing fewer traffic control problems, according to DOT&PF.
