Police and fire blotter

Posted: Thursday, June 22, 2000

Juneau police, fire officials, hospital officials and state troopers reported:

Driving while intoxicated:

About 1 a.m. today, Christopher Davidson, 26, was arrested near the intersection of Hurlock Avenue and Ka-See-An Drive for driving while intoxicated. Davidson had backed into another vehicle, and was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident. He was lodged at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

Thefts, lost/found items:

A woman, 35, reported about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday that someone entered her unlocked vehicle parked on Glacier Avenue sometime during the night and stole about $25 worth of foreign coins.

About 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, police found a blue Free Spirit bike on Mendenhall Mall Road. The bike was placed into safekeeping.

Shortly after noon Wednesday, a man, 49, reported the theft of two bikes from the Glory Hole. One was a red and blue Huffy Powerline; the other was a red Marlboro Mile bike.

About 1 p.m. Wednesday, a girl, 12, reported her blue Huffy bicycle was taken a week ago from a mobile home park on Mendenhall Loop Road.

About 1 p.m. Wednesday, a black, boys' bicycle found on Tongass Boulevard was turned into the police as found property.

Vehicle accidents:

About 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, police received a report of an accident near the intersection of Willoughby Avenue and Whittier Street. A blue 1984 Toyota pickup, driven by a man, 34, sustained $2,500 damage. A blue 1982 Honda Civic, driven by a man, 39, was totaled. No one was injured.

Animal encounters:

About 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, a citizen reported he struck a bear with his vehicle on Back Loop Road near Mint Way, and the bear ran into the woods. A police officer and a Fish and Wildlife trooper searched but could not locate the animal. Area residents were notified that there might be an injured bear in the vicinity.

Because a bear visiting the Gastineau Avenue area has become habituated to eating garbage, state Fish and Game area management biologist Neil Barten has placed a trap there to attempt to capture the bear.

Other:

About 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, police stopped a man driving on Egan Drive inbound near Twin Lakes. The man, 30, was cited for driving while his license was revoked or suspended, and then released.
