Government for the government

Letter to the editor

Posted: Wednesday, June 22, 2005

I realize that this letter is not very timely; however, I was taught to count to 10 before I said anything about something that irritates me. And this irritates me.

Regarding Rep. Dahlstom's expulsion from the majority caucus, it was always my belief that the United States and, by extension, the state of Alaska, ascribed to a principle enunciated by President Abraham Lincoln, to wit, "government of the people, by the people, and for the people."

Rep. Dahlstom held to this principle; she voted the way she believed her constituents, "the people," wanted her to vote. Obviously, the Republican majority believes that the principle is wrong and that it should be "government of the government, by the government, and for the government."
