Helen Riemer, daughter of Doug and Kathi Riemer of Juneau and Petersburg, and Kristina Paulick, daughter of Bill and Karen Paulick of Juneau, have been selected to perform with the Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus in Europe this July.

Riemer sings soprano and this year performed in the Southeast Regional Honor Choir and the Alaska State Honor Choir. She sings with the Petersburg High School Choir, the Juneau-Douglas High School Choir and the church and community choirs.

Paulick plays French horn in the Juneau-Douglas High School wind ensemble and wind quintet. She participated in the Southeast Honor Band and was first alternate for the Alaska State Honor Band.

She has played with the Sitka Fine Arts Camp Concert Band, Juneau Student Symphony, Juneau Symphony Orchestra, Youth Concerto Competition and Juneau Marching Band. She has also participated in the Alaska Youth Choir and the Chapel by the Lake Handbell Choir.

They will join other student musicians chosen from applicants representing nearly every state when the Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus begins its 2005 European concert tour in July. All applicants are carefully screened and chosen after a rigid character and musical evaluation.

All student performers will meet July 1 on the campus of Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Penn. After four days of intensive rehearsal and orientation, the group will depart for Frankfurt, Germany, where it will begin its tour.

The group will present 10 performances in some of Europe's finest concert halls and major cathedrals during its 25-day concert tour.

The students will experience the cultures of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, France and Luxembourg. Some of the locations that will be visited are Paris, Venice, Strasbourg, Innsbruck, Stresa, Verona, Rothenburg, Grindelwald, Cortina, La Chaux-de-Fonds and Disneyland Paris.

Clyde M. Barr, past state president of the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association and president of the North American Music Festivals, which sponsors music festivals in Myrtle Beach, Toronto, New York, Virginia Beach and Washington, D.C., is tour coordinator and conductor of the honor band.

Dr. Stephen W. Ausmann, associate professor of music at Dana School of Music at Youngstown University of Ohio, will serve as the conductor of the Sound of America Honor Chorus.
