Boycotting pizza chain affects others

This is regarding the letter "Boycott Bullwinkle's, services of Dr. Death" in Tuesday's Juneau Empire.

Sound off on the important issues at

Some may have their own opinions about which animal species are OK to hunt. In Alaska, many hunters travel here to hunt deer, moose, sheep and indisputably the largest land predator - the brown bear. But we don't see many letters to the editor of boycotting their professions.

I am against the idea of boycotting Bullwinkle's Pizza Parlor because of the large donations Bill Adair makes in this community.

I am an employee of Bullwinkle's because it is the only business in Juneau that pays full tuition for college students. There is no probationary period. You must work to receive this benefit. The only requirement is you must start before the semester starts.

This business is better than financial aid, because financial aid requires you to complete a minimum of 12 credits. At Bullwinkle's, there isn't a minimum-credit benchmark, only that you successfully pass your class and average 20 hours a week. The benefit is open to any age, race, creed or financial status. With tuition costs continuing to rise at an average of 5 to 7 percent each year, Adair does not flinch. On average, Bullwinkle's has employed four to six students a semester for the past 10 years.

So if you decide to boycott Bullwinkle's Pizza Parlor, which is arguably the best pizza in town, then you won't just be attacking Adair's financial status, you would be taking away from his generosity to the community and to the students he employs.
