PETERSBURG - A fire has heavily damaged a lodge and restaurant in the Southeast Alaska community of Elfin Cove.

Alaska State Troopers say the blaze, reported early Saturday morning, caused estimated damages in the $1.5 million range.

Troopers say the owners of the Cove Lodge woke up to heavy smoke in the kitchen and laundry area.

Elfin Cove firefighters and local residents unsuccessfully tried to put out the blaze. About 40 people made an assembly line to pass buckets of water from the beach to the lodge, an eye-witness told the Juneau Empire.

Other fire agencies from the region arrived later to help put out the fire.

The lodge and adjacent Coho's Bar and Grill sustained damage. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the blaze and troopers say no injuries have been reported.
