Former Juneau resident Dorothy J. Carroll, 94, died June 16, 2004, of natural causes at Martha Mary Nursing Home in Poulsbo, Wash. She was just shy of her 95th birthday.

She was born in Melon, Wis., in July 1909. After high school, she moved to Duluth, Minn., where she attended beauty college. Upon graduation, she worked in the Duluth area. She married C.A. "Pat" Carroll in 1932.

Pat's job moved them to Houston, Texas, for a time, but they eventually found their way to Oakland, Calif., where her husband had family. Shortly before the end of World War II, with two young children in tow, they moved to Skagway, where Pat worked for the Army Corps of Engineers. They made many lifetime friends while living in Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. When her husband passed away in 1960, she moved with her children to Edmonds, Wash., to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law.

Her family wrote, "Dorothy's greatest love was her family. She was a devoted wife, a generous, kind and nurturing mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family will miss the twinkle in her eye; the sound of her laughter, and her loving hugs and kisses. All who knew her loved her."

She was preceded in death by her husband, C.A. "Pat" Carroll; and her eldest son, Lawrence "Larry" Patrick Carroll.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Gordon Stenman of Poulsbo, Wash., and Charlotte Carroll and Steve Irwin of Juneau; and son and daughter-in-law, Curtis Carroll and Susan Schwab of Annapolis, Md., grandchildren, Kristan Stenman and Brent Stenman of Poulsbo, L. Patrick Carroll and Erin Carroll of Juneau, and Tim Irwin and Tom Irwin of Lynnwood, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Emily and Curtis Wildung, Jacquelyn and Kasey Stenman of Poulsbo, Andrew Irwin of Lynnwood, Wash., Shelby and Breanne Carroll of Juneau.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 20, at First Lutheran Church of Poulsbo. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to: Crista Shores Ministry, First Lutheran Church of Poulsbo, or Martha Mary Nursing Home. Donations may be sent to Charlotte Carroll, P. O. Box 20537, Juneau, AK 99802.
