Car flips, passes under trailer truck on Egan

JUNEAU - A 46-year-old man was hospitalized after his car passed beneath an Alaska Marine Lines' trailer truck on Egan Drive.

The Juneau Police Department received a report around 9:20 a.m. Monday of the vehicle accident near the Sunny Point overpass by Wal-Mart. The injured man was driving a 2004 Mitsubishi Eclipse and attempted to pass an a 2001 Kenworth truck driven headed northbound on Egan Drive, according to a police statement. The Eclipse swerved underneath the trailer and the trailer drove over it, causing it to roll several times until it came to a stop upside down.

Bystanders helped the driver, who was alone, out of the car. Capital City Fire and Rescue took him to Bartlett Regional Hospital where he was in stable condition as of press time.

The Eclipse was totaled; the truck was undamaged. The outbound lanes of Egan Drive where closed after the accident and drivers rerouted for about 40 minutes.

The case is still under investigation. Alcohol is not suspected in the crash.
