Rent-A-Wreck in Juneau received the 2009 Best of Juneau Award in the Auto Rental category by the US Commerce Association, according to the national rental car chain.
The Juneau franchise has been owned by Konnie Chitty since 2003, but the business has been here for nearly three decades.
Chitty said she bought it from George and Ethel Damion, who wanted to retire. The valley office is located next to Glacier Muffler and Mechanical. Mike Chitty, Konnie's husband, co-owns that business.
Seven employees oversee 60 cars at Rent-A-Wreck. A focus on customer service helped the franchise win the award, Chitty said. Part of that focus includes picking customers up and dropping them off when needed, she added.
Each year, the USCA identifies companies that have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. According to the organization, these are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.
Chitty's franchise in 2008 won the company's Spirit Award, which is only given to one location per year. Winners are chosen based on customer feedback and quality inspections.
Before running a car rental business, Chitty managed low-income housing units for 22 years in Juneau. Not knowing much about cars at first, she quickly learned and smoothly made the transition from renting apartments to renting vehicles.
"They're like miniature homes on wheels," she said.
