Alaska labor department assessing moratorium toll

JUNEAU — Alaska’s labor department is assessing how a federal moratorium on offshore drilling will affect Alaska

Gov. Sean Parnell last week said he wanted to ensure that idled Alaska workers would be included in a $100 million compensation fund. BP PLC agreed to establish a fund for rig workers affected by the moratorium, which followed the April oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that remains uncontained.

The labor department says it’s working with the governor’s office in Washington, D.C., to determine how Alaska workers could receive aid through the fund.

The department says it also has a system in place to help workers seek unemployment insurance or other jobs.
