William Potter

Former Juneau resident William "Bill" Potter, 65, of Davidson, N.C., died June 16, 2003, at his home.

He was born Feb. 14, 1938, in Chippewa Falls, Wis., to Robert and Dorothy Potter.

He was a graduate of University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, where he received a bachelor of science degree in education. He received a master's in education at Western Washington University. He taught social studies at Juneau-Douglas High School for 25 years and was the first full-time president of the National Education Association-Alaska. He was active in JEA, NEA-Alaska and Juneau Retired Teachers. He also was active in the Democratic Party.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Potter, and brother, Thomas Potter.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara Potter of Davidson, N.C.; stepmother, Shirley Potter of Friday Harbor, Wash.; son, Steven (Lucy) Potter of Juneau; daughters, Barbara and Debra Potter of Seattle, and Ellen Potter of California; brother, Robert (Donna) Potter of New Mexico; sister-in-law, Joyce Potter of Florida; and two grandchildren, Capri and Kiana Potter, both of Juneau.

A memorial mass was held at the Lingle Chapel of Davidson College on June 19. Memorials may be made to the Davidson Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 1088, Davidson, NC 28036.
