Public Notice: Nugget Falls Trail Construction

Sound off on the important issues at

Juneau - The Tongass National Forest Juneau Ranger District is proposing to construct a fully accessible trail to the base of Nugget Falls within the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area. The trail will be located on National Forest system lands and will begin at the Photo Point Trail and continue for 4,000 feet to the base of the falls. This trail is needed due to the high interest in hiking to Nugget Falls - periodic lake levels make access intermittent and hazardous in areas. A new trail alignment slightly offset from the lake shore is proposed which will provide safe access to hikers, yet be screened to protect the visual quality of the area. The proposed trail will have two bridges and a ramp.

Additional improvements will include benches, overlooks and directional signs

Public comments are due by July 21, 2007 and can be sent to the Juneau Ranger District, Attn. Matt Phillips, 8510 Mendenhall Loop Road, Juneau, AK 99801.
