I was one Alaskan glad to hear that Gov. Sarah Palin considered shelving the Juneau access road.
I believe that road idea is not something we need in Southeast. I'd rather see our state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities spend our money on growing the Alaska Marine Highway System, building trails to keep our citizens healthy and making our existing roads safer and more multi-modal.
The Juneau access road idea has too many documented avalanche slopes, debris flows and rock fall hazard areas that make it completely impractical for regular travel.
I am disappointed to hear that in spite of the governor, DOT employees are still working on this project. The "old boys network" at the DOT may not yet have noticed that its commander in chief is a woman and she at least sees the wisdom of canning this ridiculous project.
