Airport Art project approved by Assembly

JUNEAU - The Assembly gave unanimous approval Monday to spending $100,000 for an art project to be housed in the city airport after it is renovated.

The project would consist of dozens of metal birds hanging from the ceiling near the car rental area.

The idea for the hanging birds was chosen by a panel that reviewed 17 proposals from nine artists. The winning proposal is from Janice Criswell and Steve Henrikson.

In their proposal, Criswell and Henrickson said each bird would "be rendered in traditional 'form-line' art style of the local Tlingit Indians."

City Manager Rod Swope said the city typically puts 1 percent of city construction projects toward paying for the artwork of the building.
