State closes Bird Creek fishery

ANCHORAGE - Another popular southcentral Alaska fishery has been closed.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game on Monday issued an emergency order closing Bird Creek to all fishing until July 14 to protect a small wild run of king salmon.

The Seward Highway creek between Anchorage and Girdwood is popular for its silver, pink and chum salmon runs.

Only about 100 king salmon were counted in Bird Creek last year.

State biologists says illegal harvests and deaths due to incidental catches could endanger the future of the run.
