All-class reunion expected to draw hundreds of JDHS grads July 2-3

Nearly 300 people have registered for the Juneau-Douglas High School all-class reunion to be held July 2 and 3, organizers said.

Registrations will be accepted at the door, as well. The event costs $50.

About three-quarters of the registrants are from Outside, and nearly all participants are from classes before the 1970s, many from the 1930s and 1940s, said Betty West Miller, one of the organizers.

"Some are coming for their last visit to Juneau," Miller said. "They're in their 80s and 90s."

Others, from classes in the 1940s, are coming because they had a good time at their 50th reunion, or because they still have friends and family in Juneau, she said.

"They have such strong ties to Juneau, they can't get it out of their system, even if they haven't lived here for years," Miller said.

The alumnus traveling the farthest is Dick Folta, Class of 1953, who is coming from Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. Two people are coming from Hawaii, Miller said.

Among the registrants is Barbara Winn Roberts, Class of 1934, who resides in an assisted-living home in Spokane, Wash. Her daughter, Jean Roberts, is bringing her to the reunion. Barbara Winn Roberts' father, Grover C. Winn, was one of two graduates from the first Juneau High School class, in 1904.

The reunion will include a reception from 10 a.m. to noon on July 2 at JDHS, with a group photo at 11 a.m. A picnic at Sandy Beach starts at noon on July 2.

On July 3, alumni can tour the old high school building, now used as state offices, at 9 a.m. A whale-watching cruise on a Four Seasons vessel, with dinner at a lodge on Colt Island, costs $80 and is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. on July 3. Some seats are still available, organizers said.

Two Gray Line buses will pick up participants for the whale-watch expedition. The service is free. One bus departs sharply at 10:30 a.m. from the Alaska State Museum and the second bus departs sharply at 11 a.m. from the Nugget Mall. The vessel leaves promptly.

The picnic at Savikko Park in Douglas on July 2 is a potluck. People whose last name begins with letters A-I are asked to bring salads, beans or a vegetable tray; letters J-R should bring desserts or fruit tray; and letters S-Z should bring lettuce, tomato, onion and cheese for the burgers, pre-sliced.

Jim Geraghty will give a free guided tour of the Treadwell Trail at 1 p.m. during the picnic.

People who want to attend only the picnic can pay something there.

Harvey Hildre of the Porta-Shop has donated a flatbed to decorate for the Fourth of July parade. The older folks will ride on the flatbed and the younger ones can march behind and pass out taffy.

For more information or to help decorate the float, call Miller at 364-2937. To register, call Elaine Long at 586-3049.
