At full SAIL in the Kluane bike relay

ORCA eight-man team completes Saturday's 148.4-mile cycling race

Posted: Thursday, June 26, 2003

While many of the more than 1,100 riders in last Saturday's 148.4-mile Kluane-Chilkat International Bike Relay were racing against the clock or other competitors, for others just finishing the course brought a sense of accomplishment.

One group in the latter category was ORCA, an eight-man special needs team from Juneau sponsored by the Outdoor Recreation and Community Access program, which is part of Southeast Alaska Independent Living (SAIL).

ORCA featured eight riders - Lee Hagmeier, Lloyd George, Ken Marvin (of Sitka, the only non-Juneau rider on the team), Ed Parish, Melvin Starr, Ray Reed, Mirov Menefee and Leroy George. Hagmeier is blind; the others have developmental disabilities.

They were helped along by five support riders - ORCA outdoor activity coordinators Hans Gustafson and Tom Lee, summer staffer Jackie Forster and volunteers Jay Donig and Christine Schmid - as they completed the course.

The eight ORCA riders completed the course in 12 hours, 45 minutes, 13 seconds. While that was well off the winning time of 7:02:30 posted by solo rider Scott Damman of Boulder, Colo., the ORCA team didn't finish last. H.R. Divas, an eight-person women's team from Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, finished in 13:00:08 to win the race's Red Lantern Award for the last finishers.

"This is definitely the most ambitious thing we've ever done," Lee said. "They finished strong and it was a great accomplishment for these guys, to show what they can do. I would have been equally proud if we'd finished last, or if we'd beaten a few more teams."

"It was a big success; it went really well," said Gustafson, who added the team may be back next year.

The ORCA squad started off with Hagmeier and Lee riding a tandem bike through the first leg. Then the other riders took turns riding mountain bikes by themselves (with a support rider on another bike close by) or on the tandem. The team switched off riders several times within the middle of legs, but Hagmeier, at 61 the oldest rider in the group, put in the most miles for the team.

"It was excellent," Hagmeier said. "All of us would do a particular leg. I did all of three legs, Leg 1, Leg 4 and Leg 7. There were a lot of hills, especially in Leg 4. But if you were going uphill in the lee of the hill, it wouldn't be too bad."

The effort of Hagmeier and Lee during the first leg seemed to buoy the team's spirits, Gustafson said, especially when they finished ahead of five or six other men's teams. ORCA hosts several bike rides, hikes, kayak trips and other events, but in most of those the participants travel as a group. This was the first relay for most of the riders, and it took awhile for the ORCA riders to realize only one person would be on the course at a time.

"Once they realized it was a relay and only one person was biking, they really stepped up to the challenge," Gustafson said. "We don't have hills like that in Juneau, and our biggest concern was the hills. But once they understood what they were doing and they realized there were 1,200 other bike riders, they did well."

"I was aware toward the end of the first leg that we'd passed a number of teams," Hagmeier said. "I think that was buoying to the entire crew. ... Where there really was a lot of camaraderie was on the ORCA bus. All the windows in the bus would be down and they'd be cheering us on. It was always nice when the bus passed. It was inspiring."

Most of the other riders on the team were in the age 15-25 range, and at the end they all wanted to ride across the finish line. Unfortunately, the team only had five or six bikes so not everyone was able to ride across the finish line. The team was open to female riders, Gustafson said, but only male riders signed up.

"It was pretty good," Starr, 17, said. "It was a lot of fun. The goal was to finish. I was the finish one. A lot of people got tired, so I said 'I'll take it from here.' At the end there were police cars with blinkers on. I had to pedal hard."

The scenic course skirted the edge of Kluane National Park in Yukon Territory before crossing a sliver of British Columbia and descending into Alaska. There were at least seven bear sightings along the course.

"We saw a lot of bears on the road," Starr said. "We saw brown bears and black bears."

There were two brown bears near the border between Yukon Territory and British Columbia, near the start of Leg 4, that drew a lot of attention as they ate the vegetation along the side of the road and wrestled with each other as four Royal Canadian Mounted Police vehicles idled nearby. Hagmeier said his pulse quickened when he was told the bears were there.

"Since I was blinded by a bear (as a 17-year-old on a fishing trip on July 27, 1959, up Montana Creek), I told him (Tom Lee) it was a good way to get me to go faster," Hagmeier said.

There were headwinds for all but about 10 miles of the course, some so hard, "the bike was going backward," Starr said.

But the eight ORCA riders were among the more than 1,100 finishers in the race. During Sunday's awards ceremony, the ORCA squad drew the biggest round of applause when they were each presented with bike fanny packs to hold water bottles.

"I'd do this again; I could do this one more time," Starr said.

The race results beyond the first few teams weren't available in time for Sunday's story in the Juneau Empire, and so far only preliminary results have been released. The final official results will be posted on the race's Web site, http://www.kcibr.org.

In the preliminary results, several Juneau-based teams did well.

The top eight-person women's team was Sixteen Hungry Thighs of Juneau - Tonja Moser, Kim Zwingelberg, Kim Janelle, Vicki Orozco, Bernie Sorenson, Molly Box, Annie Janes and Kari Olson. The top eight-person men's team was Fortune Favors the Bold of Skagway, and the top eight-person mixed team was Blood, Sweat and Gears of Skagway.

The top four-person women's team was Velo Valkyrie of Juneau - Wendy Lindskoog, Tara Jeans, Michele Schindler and Betsy Fischer. The top solo rider was Tighty Whighties (Scott Damman) of Boulder, Colo., who won the overall title when he beat Team Rotary International and Les Schwab One by two seconds each in a three-way sprint for the finish line. The top female solo rider was Kirbalizer (Angela Graf) of Boulder, who is Damman's fiancee.
