Andrea De La Cruz Niere

Forty-year Juneau resident Andrea De La Cruz Niere died June 22, 2001, in Juneau.

She was born Nov. 30, 1931, in Cebu City, Philippines.

She worked for Alaska Laundry and Dry Cleaning and the state of Alaska. She enjoyed watching movies, cooking, playing bingo and socializing. Niere liked to be around people, catching up with old friends or making new ones, her family wrote.

She is survived by her son Rory Niere of Juneau; daughters Carmen (and husband Michael) Piccolo of Washington and Conchita (and husband James) McKnight of Juneau; sister Virginia Malalang of Juneau; brother-in-law Virgil Malalang; grandchildren Angie and Frankie Picolo and Sammy McKnight; and nieces Marivic Meyer and Marisa Dunlap.

A viewing will be held at the Alaskan Mortuary & Memorial Park from 4 to 7 p.m. June 28. Funeral service will be held at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 1:30 p.m. June 29. Burial will be held at the Alaska Mortuary & Memorial Park immediately following the funeral service. A reception will be held at the Filipino Community Hall.

Pallbearers at the service are Virgil Malalang, Dan Malalang, James McKnight, Michael Piccolo, Vince Yadao and Jason Wilson. Honorary pallbearers are Danny Corpuz, Joe Canon and Hildo Malalang.

Sheryl Kathleen Barcus-Ballweber

Former Juneau resident Sheryl Kathleen Barcus-Ballweber, 47, died June 25, 2001, in Lebanon, Ore. She was born in Juneau on March 4, 1954, and graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1973. She married Terry Ballweber on April 18, 1998, in Carnation, Wash.

She was a Christian and belonged to the Carnation Bible Study and Rainbow Girls. She was a member of the Dart League and loved to read, make ceramics, study the Bible, throw darts, take walks, play with grandchildren, dance and crochet.

She is survived by her husband Terry of Lebanon; sons Dustyn Barcus and Travis Pressey of Oregon; stepsons Tommy Ballweber and Steven Ballweber of Oregon; daughters Melissa Renfrow and Stephanie Pressey of Oregon; seven grandchildren and seven nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her parents Paul and Margie Willett and Kathy Hanninen and Don Barcus; brother Paul E. Barcus of Homer and sisters Mary McFall of Washington and Pamela Dunker of Juneau.

Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. June 29 in the Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel on 14431 Long St., Sweet Home, Ore. Interment will follow in the Lewis Cemetery. Viewing will be from 4 until 8 p.m. June 28 in the funeral chapel. Memorial contributions are suggested to help with funeral expenses.
