Repairs set for school roofs

`Roofs to be fixed by first day of school

Two Juneau school buildings should have new roofs by the start of school this fall.

The city intends to award a $651,150 contract to Anchorage Roofing and Contracting to replace the roof at the Marie Drake building between Juneau-Douglas High School and Harborview Elementary. A $479,149 contract to replace Auke Bay Elementary School's roof has been awarded to Coogan Construction.

The Alaska Department of Education will fund 70 percent of the projects' costs with 30 percent coming from local bonds and sales taxes, according to the city.

The contractors have 80 days to complete the projects after they receive an official notice to proceed, said Juneau School District Facilities Manager Joe Mueller. Construction could run through the start of the school year, although the disruption likely would be minor, he said.

"Typically what happens is that a majority of the heavy work takes place immediately. The smaller finishing details would take place after school starts with minimal disruption to school activities," Mueller said.

Auke Bay school will be closed during the roof replacement, but the project is fairly straightforward barring any significant unknown factors, Mueller said. The district intends to schedule activities around construction at Marie Drake, he added.

"There are plenty of places to work without disrupting activities," he said.

The projects were delayed because of limited staff in the city's architect office, but the major work on the projects should be finished before the start of the school year, said city project manager John Bowman.

"If we get some decent weather things should flow very, very nicely," he said.

A $242,440 contract to replace floors at the Juneau-Douglas High School Auxiliary Gym and Floyd Dryden Middle School will go to Alaskan Industries. Construction is scheduled for August, Mueller said.

The district also plans to build a handicapped-accessible ramp to replace a lift at JDHS. The project should be complete this fall, he said.
