Rob Conway of Juneau went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored in his professional baseball debut Tuesday, leading the the Cook County (Ill.) Cheetahs to an 8-0 victory over the Kalamazoo (Mich.) Kings in a Frontier League game in Crestwood, Ill.
Conway, who just finished his college career as a third baseman for Iowa State, signed with the Cheetahs (9-16 this season) earlier on Tuesday. The Frontier League is an independent minor league and the teams have no formal major league affiliations.
Conway's signing means Juneau now has three local athletes playing minor league baseball. Right-handed pitcher Toby Staveland is playing for the Jamestown (N.Y.) Jammers, a short-season Class A team for the Atlanta Braves, and left-handed pitcher Chad Bentz is playing for the Vermont Expos, a short-season Class A team for the Montreal Expos.
