Fish Report

Posted: Thursday, June 28, 2001

King salmon fishing in the Juneau area stayed about the same last week, taking an average of 20 hours to land a keeper. The five-year average is 20 hours and last year it took 25 hours to land a king salmon. Most of the kings sampled from last week came from the terminal harvest area adjacent to the North Douglas boat launch ramp. This area has an increased daily bag limit of four kings per day, of which no more than three may be 28 inches or greater in length. Kings harvested in this terminal area by non-residents do not count toward their three-king annual bag limit. The terminal area includes all contiguous marine waters east of a line from Indian Point, in Auke Bay, to the tip of False Outer Point on Douglas Island and waters west of the Douglas Bridge. However, an area at the mouth of Auke Creek will be closed to all sportfishing as of Friday. Kings were also picked up on the drag from Cordwood to Pt. Retreat and south of town at Pt. Salisbury and Pt. Bishop.

Nearly 70 percent of angler effort was concentrated on salmon fishing. Beside king salmon, chums continue to be caught in the Juneau area. Most were picked up around North Douglas by anglers fishing for kings. Some of these fish are still bright, while others are developing watermarks, an indication that the fish has been in the area for awhile. For the first time this year, coho and pink salmon were present in the harvest.

It took eight hours to land a halibut last week. The five-year average is seven hours, and last year it took nine hours. Most of the halibut sampled last week came from Icy Strait. Halibut were also caught closer to Juneau, with a few fish harvested from Benjamin Island and North Shelter Island areas. Halibut fishing should improve until September. The limit for halibut is two per day and four in possession with no size restrictions. For more call 465-4270.
