Shaun Nesheim celebrates Eagle Scout status
JUNEAU - Shaun Nesheim, of Juneau, celebrated the achievement of his Eagle Scout award with family and friends on May 30 at Resurrection Lutheran Church, the sponsor of Boy Scout Troop 11. Nesheim has been a scout in Troop 11 since 2002.
Along the path to Eagle, Nesheim participated in numerous activities including community service activities, hikes, campouts, high adventures, five Frostbite Challenges in Canada, and Jamborees. His most memorable high adventures were the bike ride from Skagway to Haines, via Whitehorse and Hanes Junction; a 10 day kayaking trip in Seymour Canal where diving for crabs was a big hit; and a hike to the top of Mount Edgecumbe in Sitka.
In 2005, Nesheim attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Virginia with 25,000 scouts from around the country in a week-long event then toured Washington DC. In 2007, he attended the World Scouting Jamboree celebrating the 100th anniversary of Scouting in its birthplace of England with 40,000 scouts from around the world.
Starting in January 2003, Nesheim held a leadership position in Troop 11 consecutively until December 2008. He started as a Den Chief to the Pack 10 cub scout Webelos I den, then Troop Historian, Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Scribe, and Senior Patrol Leader.
He was elected by his peers to be part of the Order of the Arrow, for which he was chapter chief for two years and helped re-vitalize the program in Juneau.
To earn the Eagle Scout award, a Scout has to earn at least 21 merit badges, and complete a service project. Nesheim's Eagle project was building a bridge across a stream used by Auke Bay Elementary classes.
Nesheim graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School this year and plans to attend the University of Alaska Fairbanks in the fall, where he will pursue Russian Studies. He would like to work with a scout troop in Fairbanks and is planning to join Alpha Phi Omega a co-ed fraternity based on community service.
He is the son of Neil and Rebecca Nesheim. Family members attending the ceremony were Grandparents Ellen Ryker, Don Greenberg, and Marjorie Fields and his Aunt Rachel Greenberg. His Scoutmaster is Keith Pahlke.
