JDHS to hold 68th annual picnic in Seattle, Wash.

SEATTLE - The 68th annual Juneau-Douglas Picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 19 at Woodland Park, in Seattle, Wash., at Stove 6.

To help in celebrating 50 years of statehood, attendees can bring special mementos they'd like to share. Organizer Barb Nielsen has poured through boxes and albums to find pictures and newspaper articles saved by her parents.

"What fond memories I have being a fifth-grader as Alaska became a state and Dad became Commissioner of Administration," she said. "We all experienced a part of history that was exciting and unique, especially living in Juneau-Douglas. I would love to have some pictures, buttons, decals or other celebration memorabilia to include in this year's raffle. Those of you from Juneau ... if you can help me with this, let me know."

This year, the Juneau-Douglas High School Class of 1987 created a scholarship for the students of Juneau. The Spirit of '87 Scholarship became a nonprofit in 2008 and gave the first two scholarships of $250 to two JDHS graduates in May 2008. Two more will be given to this year to deserving seniors with a 2.0 grade-point average or higher.

"It is hoped that many of you will want to support this scholarship so it will grow and become a lasting legacy that the community of Juneau can be proud of," Nielsen said.

In following tradition, Kuteeyaa will dance at this year's picnic. Other features include free coffee, tea, soft drinks, water, cake and ice cream; and a grill with Gerry's "Mt. Jumbo Dogs" and "Sandy Beach Sausages."
