Coast Guard rescues intoxicated boaters

JUNEAU — The Coast Guard says it rescued two intoxicated boaters after their canoe capsized in Juneau’s Gastineau Channel.

A Coast Guard cutter crew responded to the site after a local resident reported seeing people in the water near the Douglas Island bridge shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday.

Coast Guard officials say the boaters were warned about the dangers of being intoxicated while boating. The two were released in good condition to a friend.

Officials say it’s against state law to operate a motorized watercraft. They say there is no specific state law dealing with drinking and canoeing or kayaking, but they add it’s not recommended to do so.
