Former Juneau resident Virginia Shirley Mielke, 79, died in her Port Angeles, Wash., home after a long illness.
She was born in Apponaug, R.I., to James and Susan (Kingman) O'Brien. In April 1971, she married Ralph Max Mielke in Anchorage. In addition to being a homemaker, she owned a resort and a store. She was a past president of the Elks in Juneau and a member of square dance clubs in both Alaska and Washington. Her favorite pastimes included being with her grandchildren, watching soap operas with her family, baking, reading and camping.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Edward (Gail) Keenan and William (Lillian) Keenan, both of Rhode Island; daughter, Jane Cline of Sequim, Wash.; stepchildren, Max, Steve, Roy Mielke and Nadine Culbreath of Juneau, and Bruce Mielke of Sitka; brother, Robert O'Brien of California; sisters, Shirley (Hank) Forte of Rhode Island and Barbara (Clarence) Kuhn of Arkansas; eight grandchildren and six step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held June 26 and will be held again 1-4 p.m. on July 2. A Celebration of Life will be held at the family home, 85 Wall Street, Port Angeles, Wash.
