Remembering the Pamela Rae: Thank you for the photos

Posted: Friday, June 29, 2007

I enjoy reading the Juneau Empire online each week and this name brings back memories of my childhood in Petersburg. The Pamela Rae was one of the premier fishing boats of its era, owned by Magnus Martens and named for his eldest daughter. Magnus was a true highliner and was always a top producer of both salmon and halibut.

Sound off on the important issues at

My father fished on this fine vessel and I was fortunate to get to go along as a young boy for a seining trip to Port Houghton in the summertime long ago. Magnus Martens was the son of one of the founding Norwegian families in Petersburg and he was also one of the partners whose seed money started Petersburg Fisheries, Inc. which became Icicle Seafoods.

Magnus was a true gentleman in the style of his time, and made his crew members remove their hats in restaurants and be respectful of people in public places, at least when he was present. He would have been proud to see the fresh paint on his fishing boat.

Thanks for the good memories this photo brings to me.
