Big JDHS welcome back

Juneau-Douglas High School is preparing to welcome all the students back to school this fall by presenting a special greeting and a piece of fruit to each student on the first day of school. Organizers are asking support from the various cultural groups of Juneau - Alaska Native, African American, Chinese, Filipino, French, Hawaiian, Italian, Korean, Mexican, Norwegian, Vietnamese, etc. They ask that each group donate 100 apples or bananas and send at least one representative to sit at a table for the JDHS Welcome by the Cultural Groups in Juneau, 7-8:30 a.m. on Aug. 25. The purpose for this event is to demonstrate a cross-cultural community together in friendship and welcome. Groups must reply by July 30. For more information and to register, contact Eunice at 586-5800 or Connie at 586-3694, cmunro@gci.net.

Alaska State Museum closure

The Alaska State Museum will be closed in observance of Independence Day, July 4. It will reopen July 5, with summer visiting hours continuing from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily except holidays.

Although the museum galleries will be closed July 4, the Friends of the Alaska State Museum will be hosting a fundraising barbecue on the museum grounds. The barbecue, under the direction of chef Kai Augustine, will begin at 11:30 a.m. until the food runs out. The purchase of a Hawaiian-style beef barbecue lunch will support the museum expansion project.
