ANCHORAGE - A retired rural educator has been appointed as a trustee for the Yupiit School District in southwest Alaska.
Education officials say Darrell Sanborn will work with the school district, school board and communities to implement the district's student improvement plan.
The district serves about 450 students in Akiachak, Akiak, and Tuluksak.
The move is part of a process followed by the state for schools falling short of adequate yearly progress in reading, writing and math.
Officials say the state has worked with the Yupiit School District for five years and the appointment of a trustee is the next phase of support.
Officials say a trustee will remain until the district shows at least a 2 percentage-point improvement for three consecutive years.
