Taken in 1925, this photograph looks out across the Gastineau Channel at the "Lights of Juneau" and the Alaska-Juneau gold mine. The A-J mine was built in 1916 and became one of the largest gold mines in North America. Mining declined by the 1930s, and the A-J Mine closed in 1944 when it was declared a nonessential wartime activity. The A-J mine produced more than 150,000 ounces of gold a year during the height of its operations.
