Lyena Strelkoff and Dean Purvis, performing artists and writers from Los Angeles, will be offering three weeks of classes at the Canvas Art Studio and Gallery. The pair, founding members of the award-winning Ziggurat Theatre Ensemble in Los Angeles, will concentrate on storytelling through movement, scriptwriting, and acting, and classes are open to all ages. Lyena and Dean are both founding members of the award-winning Ziggurat Theatre Ensemble in Los Angeles.
Paralyzed from the waist down in 2002, Strelkoff is a professional actor, dancer and educator. her talents also include writing, storytelling and visual art. As an educator, Lyena has worked with hundreds of children in Los Angeles area schools.
A writer, actor, director and acting coach in Los Angeles, Purvis seeks to use reflection and humor to shine a light on the universal experiences in life. A classically trained actor, he holds a BFA from Southern Methodist University and an MFA from University of Washington.
Strelkoff and Purvis consider creative expression a necessity in their lives. In the face of Lyena's injury, artistry has offered a means to understand and integrate their experiences, as well as provided connections to the hearts and minds of the hundreds they've been fortunate enough to meet along the way.
The classes they are offering include:
Storytelling Through Movement, offered in two sessions, July 6-9 and July 13-16, for ages 3-4; Stories, Movement and Clay, in two sessions, July 6-9 and July 13-16, for ages 5-6; Writing & Performing Personal Stories, in three sessions July 7 & 9, July 14 & 16, July 21 & 23, for teens and adults; Thriving with Loss for Individuals, offered Mondays, July 6-20, for teens and adults; Thriving with Loss for Families/Partners, offered on wednesdays, July 8-22, for teens and adults; and Glass, Clay, and Storytelling for Kids, in two sessions, July 20-24, for ages 6-12.
