JUNEAU - The University of Alaska Southeast will host a panel discussion about the causes of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and how to prevent similar accidents on Thursday, July 8 at 7 p.m. in the Egan library on the university campus.
Due to Alaska's own experience with oil spills and the state's continued economic dependence on fossil fuel extraction, many Alaskans are eager to learn about the causes of the BP oil spill and how to prevent similar crises from occurring in the future, the university said.
Panelists include Fran Ulmer, UAA Chancellor and member of the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill; Jim Ayers, former Exxon Valdez Trustee Council Executive Director; Dr. Jeff Short, lead chemist for the US and Alaska on the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill; and Nick Jans, Alaskan writer and 20-year Arctic resident.
