JUNEAU - This spring, Eaglecrest Ski Area joined a growing list of funds at the Juneau Community Foundation. The Friends of Eaglecrest Fund, a newly established agency fund, will initially be used to build a public use cabin in honor of Matt Brakel, who was killed in an avalanche while snowboarding on Mount McGinnis in 1999. The cabin is funded by donations from the Alaska Community Foundation and the Machamer Charitable Fund.
At Eaglecrest, a service corridor is currently being built to the top of the mountain. Two new chairlifts are being installed, electricity is being run from North Douglas Highway and improvements to the lower Nordic loop are being made.
"The Friends of Eaglecest Board of Directors decided to wait until all the improvements have been made this summer to assure proper placement of the cabin," said Kirk Duncan, Eaglecrest general manager. "The Juneau Community Foundation is a great asset to the community and the right avenue to place the money until the time comes to build the cabin."
