Organization Description: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska strengthens our communities by providing mentors to all children who need and want a caring adult role model - special friends who can help them expand their horizons, realize their potential and enrich their futures - changing their lives.
"Bigs" provide the additional guidance and support needed to keep a child on the right path toward promise and possibility. Mentoring is about prevention, and provides children with the tools to grow and succeed in a consistent, positive environment.
Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is simple. It's sharing time, energy and friendship with a child in need. There is no special expertise required, and volunteer mentors often report geting back much more than they give.
Wanted: Easy going Big Brothers! BBBS needs a few laid-back Bigs for Littles specifically looking for a friend to hang out with. If you are capable of kicking it around town, throwing a Frisbee, swimming or going to the movies, you are needed.
BBBS is on a mission to recruit more Alaska Native Big Brothers. The majority of Littles ready to have a Big Brother are Alaska Native. Currently, there is only one Alaska Native Big Brother in Juneau. If you know good men, ask them to consider giving an hour each week as a Big in the school program.
BBBS needs a few good Valley men. Do you love the outdoors and playing outside? How about puzzles, reading and joking around? If you do, then you've got something in common with the 10 Little Brothers waiting to be matched with a school mentor in the Valley elementary schools. It only takes one hour to be a friend.
