Miller wins Douglas Two-Miler

Ellefsons claim women's, children's division crowns

Shawn Miller thought he was running alone in front of the pack during Wednesday's Douglas Two-Miler when suddenly he heard footsteps behind him.

Miller, who runs collegiately at Western Washington University, snuck a peak over his shoulder and there was John Bursell. Miller put on a burst of speed and held off Bursell to win Wednesday's Fourth of July race in Douglas, but he didn't think it would be so close. Miller's unofficial time was 10 minutes, 10 seconds, with Bursell four seconds back and a hard-charging Jesse Stringer taking third place.

"John came out of nowhere about a half-mile from the end," Miller said. "He has a kick at the end of his races, and so does Jesse."

"I was right behind him for the first mile-and-a-half," Bursell said. "I was clipping his heels. I thought he knew I was there. I expected him (Stringer) to come flying by both of us at the end."

Merry Ellefson was the top female runner, crossing the finish line in front of the Douglas Fire Hall in 11:11, good for seventh overall. Ellefson was more than a minute ahead of second-place finisher Breanne Rohm, who edged out Heidi Denton in a sprint finish.

Ellefson said she had help with the headwind, as she hid behind some of the larger male runners.

"When you're behind some of these big, fat geezers, they block the wind," Ellefson joked.

She seemed more impressed with her nephew, Kjell Ellefson, 10, who was the top runner in the children's division. Kjell, who lives in Vail, Colo., posted a time of 15:55.
