Southeast Senior Service offers seniors transportation

Posted: Sunday, July 05, 2009

JUNEAU - The Care-A-Van Transportation Service is operated by Southeast Senior Services, a division of Catholic Community Service. Care-A-Van is designed to assist senior citizens (age 60 and older) and people of any age who are unable to use the Capital Transit bus due to a disability. Although the Care-A-Van is primarily funded through a contract with the city of Juneau, the service also receives financial support from Medicaid Waiver revenues, a grant from the Alaska Division of Senior and Disabilities Services, and passenger contributions.

Door-to-door transportation is available the same hours as the bus system: Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The reservations office is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 2 to 4 p.m.

Care-A-Van takes passengers anywhere in Juneau they would like to go-to the doctor, to the store, to work, to school, for example-though it does not travel past the ferry terminal. All Care-A-Van vehicles are wheelchair accessible.

The Care-A-Van drivers are friendly, courteous, and trained in defensive driving and passenger safety and service. To arrange a ride, eligible persons (or those advocating on their behalf) should call 463-6194. They will need to give the pick up location, the destination location, and the desired date and time to reach the destination. Planning ahead and requesting a ride at least one day in advance will help one's chances of getting the ride when he or she wants it. Passengers are also encouraged to reserve their return trips when making the initial reservation. Each passenger may bring a guest along as long as that person boards and disembarks at the same locations as the passenger.

Care-A-Van is the Americans with Disabilities Act Complementary Paratransit service to the Capital Transit "fixed route" bus. As such, persons with ADA cards have priority service on the Care-A-Van. To obtain an ADA card application or for more information about the Care-A-Van service, call supervisor Dale Morris at 463-6114.
