The Juneau Volunteer Marching Band would especially like to thank Sen. Dennis Egan, Rep. Beth Kerttula, and Rep. Cathy Muñoz for the their participation in our "Long-timers" concert Sunday Their recollections of people and events from fifty years ago were especially interesting and quite poignant.
The overflow audience at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center- relocated from Marine Park because of the rain - was full of long-time Juneau families and familiar faces and new friends. Conversations including "... remember ... " could be heard everywhere. This audience was the greatest! Kim Andree's in-depth coverage of the band's history on Thursday no doubt helped build the crowd.
Conductor Mike Bucy did an excellent job preparing the band and organizing an interesting program. He also conducted a noon concert on Wednesday for locals and visitors in Marine Park. Bucy played conductor and was in the front row with the trombones when the band marched in the Juneau and Douglas Fourth of July parades on Saturday.
This year will be the last time 70-year-old Bea Findlay, world's oldest Drum Major, will march in Juneau but she has a brand new uniform and can still strut her stuff. Findlay didn't miss a beat playing percussion for the concert. Three new baton-twirlers, possible drum major successors, will precede Findlay in the parades.
Finally a big thank you and kudos to all the hard-working musicians, whose work has only begun: Jeff Brown and the Juneau Joeys; Capt. John George, who donated use of the Juneau Steamboat to transport guests from Marine Park; Goldbelt Corp., for temporary permission to use their dock; Nancy DeCherney, for last-minute access to the JACC; and to Capital City Celebrations, especially Kathy Hildre and Kaysa Korpela, and the ladies who served the Alaska 50 birthday cake! How sweet it is!
Least we forget, a special thank you to Peter Anderegg and wife Cathy, for producing this event and ensuring that everyone in Juneau had a wonderful "sunny" Sunday afternoon!
Good job, everyone!
