JUNEAU - Gov. Sean Parnell is defending a recent out-of-state trip to the Christian ministry Focus on the Family as fitting with his efforts to strengthen families and end domestic violence.
Questions were raised about last month's trip to Colorado by The Alaska Dispatch. Parnell, a Republican whose agenda has focused heavily on family and pocketbook issues, faces election this year.
His spokeswoman, Sharon Leighow, says Focus on the Family invited Parnell to discuss his long-term efforts to end domestic violence and sexual assault. She says the ministry also shared "many good ideas" that could be used to further strengthen Alaska families, including a program that promotes character building in students.
Tom Minnery, of Focus on the Family's political arm CitizenLink, was traveling Friday and was unavailable for comment.
