Rick Boyle of Juneau claimed top honors last weekend in the Alaska 300-yard Prone Rifle Championship, held Sunday at Juneau's Montana Creek rifle range.
Boyle, a former state high-power rifle champion, posted a near-perfect score of 595 points out of 600 (99.2 percent). Boyle also hit 28 X's, the smallest part of the target center. Mal Menzies of Juneau took second place with 572 points and 13 X's, followed by Ray Coxe in third place with 567 points and 15 X's.
Boyle scored 196 with four X's in the first round of 20 shots, where shooters used military service rifles. On the second round of 20 shots, for rifles with open sights, Boyle scored 199 points with seven X's. In the final round of 20 shots, for any type of rifle (hunter or military) and any type of sights (open or scope), Boyle shot a perfect score of 200 points and hit 17 X's.
Several Juneau Rifle and Pistol Club members will be in Fairbanks this weekend for the Alaska State High-Power Rifle Championship,. which takes place on Saturday.
On Saturday, July 14, the JRPC hosts a .22-caliber silhouette shooting event at Montana Creek rifle range. On Sunday, July 15, a high-power sporter (hunter) rifle match takes place at Montana Creek, with another high-power event set for Sunday, July 29.
The season concludes with the Alaska Sporter (Hunter) Rifle Championship on Sunday, Aug. 12, with the finale taking place at the Southeast Alaska State Fair Grounds in Haines. The event is cosponsored by JRPC and the Haines Sportsman Association.
