House increases Coast Guard budget

WASHINGTON - Rep. Don Young's drive to add $300 million to President Bush's Coast Guard budget fizzled last week in the House appropriations process, but the agency remains in line for a substantial increase.

The House's final transportation bill would spend an even $5 billion on the agency, a half-billion dollar boost from this year. That's below what Young had sought. The bill now goes to the Senate.
