Anderson wins scholarship from a travel industry foundation

The Alaska Travel Industry Association Foundation awarded Erik Anderson of Juneau the Kris Geldaker Memorial Scholarship, which is dedicated to helping students pursuing a career in tourism or a maritime-related field.

He will receive $2,500 per year, renewable for up to four years. He attends the University of Alaska Southeast.

Picnic in Seattle set for July 17

The 63rd annual Juneau-Douglas Picnic will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, July 17, at Lincoln Park in West Seattle.

Friends and families will share stories of their Juneau-Douglas years. Chancellor John Pugh, from the University of Alaska Southeast, will attend and provide information about the Juneau campus and programs.

Spencer earns honors for spring term at Phillips Exeter Academy

Logan R. Spencer of Juneau, a 10th-grader at Phillips Exeter Academy, has earned honors for the spring term. The son of Larry Spencer and Carola Thompson, he is a first-year student at the independent secondary school in Exeter, N.H.

Douglas parade announces winners

The float prize winners of the Fourth of July Douglas parade are: most patriotic, UAS; best marching band, Stoller White; most beautiful, Juneau Rotary Clubs; best commercial, Clear Cut Tree Service; most Alaskan, AJ Mine; and best non-profit, Shriners.

Register now for Girl Scout day camp

Registration is open for Girl Scout Day Camp at Eaglecrest Ski Area Aug. 16 through 19. All girls entering first grade in the fall through 17 years of age can register. Bus service is available.

Girls entering seventh grade and higher can sign up to be a program aide. Adult volunteers are needed.

Registration forms are due by Aug. 1 to the Girl Scout office at 316 W. 11th St. New forms are available at the office. Camp fees are $35 for campers and $25 for program aids, plus $10 if not registered in Girl Scouts. For more information, call the Girl Scout office at 586-1710 or the camp director at 209-3635.

Book club at library seeks kids as readers

The downtown public library will host book clubs for kids this summer. Participation is required at the first or second meeting, and the library will provide the books.

Simila honored at Northwest Nazarene

Juneau resident Megan Simila made the dean's list for the spring 2005 semester at Northwest Nazarene University. Students on the list must have maintained a 3.5 grade-point average for the semester.
