Charlotte Greenewald Underwood

Charlotte K. (Lottie) Greenewald Underwood, 82, died July 3, 2004, at Wildflower Court after a lengthy battle with cancer.

She was born April 2, 1922, in Hoonah to Robert and Elsie Greenewald. She was a T'Dakdeintaan from the Mt. Fairweather House of Hoonah. She was baptized in the Catholic Church in Hoonah. She married L. Donald Underwood in 1946. They made their home in Hoonah, then moved to Ketchikan in 1952 and worked in the retail grocery business. She later moved to the state of Washington for a few years, before returning to Hoonah and Juneau in the early 1980s to help care for her grandsons.

Her family said she enjoyed fishing, family and loved children. She took great pleasure in her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sons, Robert (Tiny) and Karl Underwood; brothers, Robert Jr. and Albert Greenewald; sisters, Mabel Rollog, Mathilda Skaflestad, Genevieve Erickson, Rosina Andrews and Janet Robinson; and several nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her daughter, Genevieve (Lolly) Schmidt (Larry) of Gig Harbor, Wash.; son, James B. Underwood of Juneau; grandsons, Brandon and Kier Schmidt, Donald, Steven, Nathan and Adam (Kathy) Underwood; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Hilda See of Hoonah, Pauline (John) Hinchman of Sedro Woolley, Wash., and Freda Borchick and Marlene (Clifford) Johnson of Juneau; brothers, Adam (Esther) and Karl (Cecelia) Greenewald; brothers-in-law Alf Skaflestad of Hoonah and Max Robison of LaConner, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Clifford Johnson, Brandon and Kier Schmidt, Donald, Steven, Nathan and Adam Underwood.

Honorary pallbearers will be Alf Skaflestad Sr., John Hinchman, Max Robison, Gordon Greenewald, Jeff, Ray, Kenneth, August and Keith Skaflestad, Michael Wise, Steve Messerschmidt, Larry Schmidt, Lyle Simpson, Donald Starbard, Lianne and Darrell Coates.

A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at the Cathedral of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 416 Fifth Street in Juneau. Another funeral Mass will be held at noon Saturday, July 10, at Holy Name Catholic Church. Graveside services and burial will be held at Bayview Cemetery in Ketchikan. A rosary service will be held Friday evening in Ketchikan.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in her memory to Huna Heritage Foundation's Greenewald Scholarship Fund at 9301 Glacier Highway, Juneau, AK 99801.
