Time for a change of transportation

The motorcycle article (July 4) by I-Chun Che was very good. I am one of the 926 motorcycles riders in Juneau, and while I love riding here, I try to get to the Lower 48 at least once a year.

There are only a few ways you can get out of Juneau with your bike and one of them is the Alaska Marine Highway System. I, for one, am getting tired of being taken advantage of by this system. The marine highway charges a minimum of 10 feet for each motorcycle. When you get on board the deck crew parks motorcycles side by side, reselling unused space to standby vehicles. This has happened to us four times.

This has been an ongoing battle with the marine highway. I have written to directors, legislators, crew and captains with little response. The straw that broke my back was when coming through Skagway I was charged additional money for the hitch on my truck. I measured the truck but forgot to include the hitch.

I have never been real outspoken for a road out of Juneau because I never thought I would see it in my lifetime. I think it's time for a change.
