FORT RICHARDSON - The Army announced that two Fort Richardson-based soldiers were killed in Afghanistan on July 4.
Pfc. Justin A. Casillas of Dunnigan, Calif., and Pfc. Aaron E. Fairbairn of Aberdeen, Wash., died during an attack on their outpost in the Paktika Province of eastern Afghanistan. Thirteen other soldiers were injured as well.
The 19-year-old Casillas and the 20-year-old Fairbairn were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.
Casillas joined the Army last July, and reported to Fort Richardson in November 2008. Fairbairn enlisted in January 2008 and arrived at Fort Richardson in June of that year.
