KENAI - Positions on the Kenai City Council will pay $100 more per month.
In a 5-2 vote last week, the council voted to boost pay from $400 to $500 a month. The mayor's monthly salary will jump from $900 to $1,000.
The new pay rates won't take effect until after the municipal election this fall.
Mayor Pat Porter and Councilman Joe Moore voted against the raises, saying they did not seek their positions for the money.
Supporters said higher pay might inspire more people to run for council in the city of about 7,700 residents. They also noted that council members cut their own stipends when the city's sales tax revenue declined with K-Mart's departure. The city now has Home Depot and Lowe's.
