Former GOP Senate candidate seeks debt help

OLYMPIA, Wash. - Sen. Don Benton is hoping that those who once supported his U.S. Senate bid will now help him pay off his debt.

The Vancouver Republican dropped out of the race last month and endorsed fellow Republican Dino Rossi. On Tuesday, Benton posted a note to his Facebook page asking supporters to help him and his wife with nearly $20,000 in campaign-related bills.

He says trying to "save the country is an expensive personal proposition" and that even small donations would "lighten our personal load."

In addition to Rossi, several candidates remain in the race against Democratic incumbent Sen. Patty Murray, including former Washington Redskins player Clint Didier, a Republican endorsed by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Washington's top two primary is Aug. 17.
