Three rescued when canoe capsizes

A canoe capsized on the Mendenhall River Saturday, sending three people into the glacial waters.

A man, a woman and a child in a 17-foot canoe were traveling downstream when the canoe hit a log and bent in half. Firefighters were alerted at 2:32 p.m. there were people in the water near Meander Way and River Court.

The trio was ``hanging to the canoe and the log when we got there. We were in verbal contact from the shore, but unable to reach them,'' said Lt. Jerome Prahl of the Glacier Fire Station. The jet boat reached the victims about 20 minutes later and brought them to shore.

All were treated at the scene by paramedics. The woman was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital to determine if she had hypothermia.

Firefighters dispatched a jet boat from downstream and a cat raft from upstream. Three rescue rigs and two ambulances also responded to the scene.

Police responded to the emergency but were told by firefighters their help was not needed, police dispatch said. .

The woman was treated and released before 5 p.m., a nursing supervisor said.

Malaspina to be delayed July 16

The departure of the ferry Malaspina from Skagway on Sunday, July 16, will be delayed by the Alaska Marine Highway System.

The 2 hour 15 minute delay is to accommodate passengers and vehicles returning from the Dust Ball Softball Tournament in Whitehorse next weekend.

The revised schedule has the Malaspina leaving Skagway on July 16 at 6:30 p.m., arriving in Haines at 7:30 p.m., leaving Haines at 8:45 p.m. and arriving in Juneau on Monday, July 17, at 1:15 a.m.
