Fort Richardson soldier dies in Afghanistan

FORT RICHARDSON - The Army says another Fort Richardson soldier has been killed in Afghanistan.

Pfc. Nicolas Hugh Joseph Gideon died Monday at Forward Operating Base Salerno from injuries suffered earlier that day in Paktya, when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Eight other soldiers in his unit were injured.

Gideon was a cavalry scout with 1st Squadron (Airborne), 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division.

Originally from Murrieta, Calif., the 20-year-old joined the Army in June 2008.
