Police fielding bear break-in calls

JUNEAU - Seven nuisance bear encounters occurred in the community in as many days, according to a bear report the Juneau Police Department's released Wednesday.

Several bears were reported breaking into people's homes this week. Police responded to a report Sunday afternoon about a bear in a resident's kitchen at a house downtown. A bear was also reported in the kitchen of a downtown residence on Tuesday afternoon. Police responded to a report of a bear reaching in through a screen on a kitchen window of a downtown home Wednesday.

Three of the instances involved bears getting into garbage cans. Police responded to a report early Sunday morning of a black bear tearing the roof off a secure garbage enclosure near Bartlett Regional Hospital. A black bear was reported breaking into a trash shed with a sliding glass door downtown near Wickersham Avenue on Tuesday morning.
